Charleston Grotto has got to be one of the
weirdest, longest-running garage bands in the
U.S. – if not the world – that you’ve never heard
of. In 1960, four pre-pube boys from the
Larchmont area of Los Angeles started a band
called the Fantastic Four: Rear (Danny Cohen),
who sang and played chromatic harmonica, his
younger brother Front (Greg Cohen) on
converted bass, Bottom (John Haupenthal) on
cardboard drums, and Fidel (George Bell) playing
guitar (who anointed each member and everyone
in their circle with similar nicknames that stuck,
forever). Committed to parental defiance and
other anti-social 'juvenilia', the band existed in
some nether zone between surf and the first
British Invasion and quickly name-changed to
Charleston Grotto. With such snot ditties in
their early days as “Loogie,” “Damn,”
“Switchblade” and “Kill the Teacher,” Grotto
anticipated punk ‘tude in 1962-63, like kiddies
from Village of the Damned arriving in 'Leave it to
Beaverland' and getting their hands on musical
instruments. What if the Mothers of Invention
was an obnoxious children’s rock theater group
with a dollop of early Rolling Stones and Fugs’
scatology? How can guys so accomplished still
think of themselves as a garage band? With
Rear's 2007 release 'Shades of Dorian
Gray', his third CD for Anti/Epitaph as
Danny Cohen, and Front, former
bassist-arranger for Tom Waits,
nowadays is the-go-to string bassist
among the East Coast avant-garde,
including such notables as Laurie
Anderson, Ornette Coleman, Lou
Reed, John Zorn -- and Woody Allen!
Charleston Grotto last appeared at
The Theater of Note, Los Angeles, on
Tuesday, February 27, in 2007 and at
The Freeze, Los Angeles, on Saturday,
December 22, for their 'Eve of the
Apocalypse' & 'Farewell to Life event'.
